Intel said Tuesday it has developed plans for a ``community computer''
for use in villages and rural areas in the developing world.

The machine can operate on power from a car battery and it has a
filter to keep out bugs from flying into the machine.

Bill Siu, general manager of the channel platforms group at Intel,
said the machine is built to provide Internet access for entire
communities and villages in remote areas of countries such as India.
The computer is rugged enough to withstand dust storms, bug
infestations, extreme temperatures and lapses in electrical power. The
machine will be available next year.

Local PC makers in places such as India would build the machines, Siu said.
